Households in Lanao del Sur are under mounting pressure from rising food costs — July 2026 headline inflation reached 9.7%, climbing to 10.1% for the bottom 30% of income earners and 15.8% for rice specifically. Super Typhoon Inday and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon compounded this strain in July 2026, causing flooding and landslides that affected 2,657 families across 60 barangays in 14 municipalities. Looking ahead, PAGASA expects El Niño to intensify toward late 2026, raising the risk of dry spells that could further strain agriculture, water access, and household food security.

PHILCARE is distributing food baskets — 10 kg rice, 6 cans of sardines, 1 liter cooking oil, 6 packs of instant noodles, and 6 twin packs of coffee — to 150 verified vulnerable households. Priority goes to households with unstable income, larger dependency burdens, elderly or disabled members, single-parent status, recent disaster impacts, or limited access to other assistance. Beneficiaries move through a structured, accountable cycle covering verification, procurement and quality control, food packing, distribution, proof of receipt, feedback, and monitoring, before the project is formally closed out, with distributions organized in batches across the 12-week period.

For a household of around five members, each basket meaningfully supplements existing food supplies, easing immediate food spending and freeing up limited resources for other essentials like education, transportation, utilities, and medicine — offering timely relief while families cope with high prices, flood recovery, and looming dry-season pressure.
