Challenge

Students from low-income and economically vulnerable families can face significant barriers to continuing their education. Tuition and school fees, transportation, learning materials, accommodation, food, and other education-related expenses can place sustained pressure on household resources and may affect a student’s ability to remain enrolled and progress in their studies. These challenges can be particularly significant for students from underserved, geographically dispersed, or crisis-affected communities, including parts of Mindanao and the Bangsamoro region, where poverty, displacement, livelihood insecurity, and distance from educational institutions may compound the financial pressures associated with pursuing education. For capable and motivated students, financial hardship should not become an avoidable barrier to continuing their education. At the same time, financial assistance alone may not address all the challenges students face as they prepare for adult, professional, and community life. PHILCARE therefore approaches student sponsorship as both educational assistance and an opportunity to encourage personal development, responsibility, leadership, and service to others.

Response

PHILCARE implements the Student Sponsorship Programme primarily from Marawi City, supporting eligible students from different communities who pursue their studies in universities, colleges, and Arabic and Islamic educational institutions. Students are assessed according to programme eligibility, documented need, available resources, and applicable sponsorship conditions. PHILCARE seeks and coordinates sponsorship support from individual sponsors and other eligible funding sources. Depending on the applicable conditions, educational assistance may also be supported through Zakat and community-based giving initiatives, including PHILCARE’s small donation-box initiative known as Sakodo. Restricted and religious funds are identified and administered according to their respective conditions and are not treated as interchangeable sources of funding. Sponsorship arrangements vary. Some sponsors are able to support a student over several years or through completion of an approved educational pathway, while other sponsorships may be available for a shorter period. Where sponsorship is interrupted and the student remains eligible, PHILCARE may seek a replacement sponsor or another appropriate source of assistance, subject to available resources and applicable funding conditions. Sponsorship may also conclude when a student graduates, transfers, discontinues study, becomes ineligible, or obtains another educational opportunity. Beyond educational assistance, PHILCARE seeks to support students’ broader development through appropriate educational activities, Islamic and values-based formation, leadership and life-skills development, and community engagement. Sponsored students may also participate voluntarily in PHILCARE humanitarian activities, including emergency response and Ramadan programmes, providing practical opportunities to develop teamwork, responsibility, leadership, and a commitment to community service.

Impact

The Student Sponsorship Programme helps eligible students remain engaged in education and progress toward completing their studies despite financial and other barriers. Its intended impact extends beyond financial assistance by combining educational support with opportunities for personal development, leadership, values formation, and community service. PHILCARE’s early sponsorship experience provides an important example of longer-term impact. In 2019, PHILCARE provided one-year sponsorship assistance to 71 students. Among them were 50 college-level students studying at an Arabic and Islamic educational institution. All 50 subsequently graduated and are now working as teachers, demonstrating how even time-limited educational assistance can contribute to outcomes extending well beyond the sponsorship period. In the programme’s more recent sponsorship cycles from 2022 to 2026, PHILCARE has documented 16 student graduates. Other students remain in education, while individual sponsorship pathways may change because of graduation, transfer, discontinuation of studies, changes in sponsorship availability, or access to other educational opportunities. The programme also provides opportunities for sponsored students to participate in humanitarian and community service. Some students volunteer in PHILCARE activities, including emergency response and Ramadan programmes, allowing them to develop practical experience in teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and service while continuing their studies. Through this approach, PHILCARE seeks not only to help students continue their education, but also to support the development of capable, responsible, and socially engaged individuals who can contribute positively to their families, professions, and communities.

Project updates

  1. 83 Active Sponsored Students PHILCARE continues to support 83 active sponsored students through its Student Sponsorship Programme in 2026. The students come from different communities and pursue their studies primarily in Marawi City, including at universities and colleges as well as Arabic and Islamic educational institutions. In addition to educational assistance, students may participate in educational and personal development activities, Islamic and values-based formation, leadership and life-skills development, and community service. Some sponsored students also volunteer in PHILCARE humanitarian activities, particularly emergency response and Ramadan programmes. Within the more recent sponsorship cycles covering 2022–2026, PHILCARE has documented 16 student graduates, while other sponsored students continue their studies or have followed different educational pathways.

  2. 2025 — 80 Students Supported PHILCARE supported 80 students through its Student Sponsorship Programme in 2025, providing educational assistance to help eligible students continue their studies. Alongside sponsorship assistance, the programme included educational support and student engagement activities intended to complement students’ formal education and contribute to their personal development and community participation. During the year, sponsored students progressed through different educational pathways, with some reaching important milestones, including graduation, while others continued their studies into subsequent sponsorship periods.

  3. 2024 — 41 Students Supported PHILCARE supported 41 students through its Student Sponsorship Programme in 2024, providing educational assistance to help eligible students continue their studies. Some sponsorships continued beyond the year, reflecting the programme’s multi-year approach where student eligibility, sponsorship arrangements, and available resources permitted continued support.

  4. 2023 — 12 Students Supported PHILCARE supported 12 students through its Student Sponsorship Programme in 2023, providing educational assistance to help eligible students continue their studies according to available sponsorship arrangements and programme resources.

  5. 2022 — 6 Students Supported PHILCARE supported 6 students through its Student Sponsorship Programme in 2022, providing educational assistance to eligible students according to available sponsorship resources. This marked the resumption of documented student sponsorship activities following a year in which no student sponsorship was recorded in 2021.

  6. 2020 — 29 Students Supported PHILCARE supported 29 students through its Student Sponsorship Programme in 2020, continuing the educational assistance initiative that had begun the previous year.

  7. 2019 — Programme Launch and 71 Students Supported PHILCARE began its documented Student Sponsorship Programme in 2019, providing one-year sponsorship assistance to 71 students. Among the beneficiaries were 50 college-level students enrolled in an Arabic and Islamic educational institution. All 50 subsequently completed their studies and are now working as teachers, representing an important long-term outcome from PHILCARE’s early educational assistance. Although this initial sponsorship cycle lasted for only one year, the subsequent educational and professional progression of these students demonstrates how timely educational support can produce benefits extending well beyond the sponsorship period.
